 Week 3: Jan25 - Jan31

Slideshows

Week 3

During week 3 of the course, participants will:

  • have an overview of online slideshows tools
  • see examples of slideshows being used in the educational setting
  • choose, at least, two slideshows platforms to be used for the same purpose and compare them
  • take some of their flickr photos and send them to a slideshow

Note:

You will need to register at each of our recommended sites in order to complete your tasks. You've already played around with the first site, Big Huge Labs, in week 2 to remix your photos. Now, we'll use Big Huge Labs to create a slideshow. The second site, Animoto,  requires you to have some photo images loaded on your computer. The final site, Slideshare,  requires you to create a slideshow in a powerpoint or keynote format, then upload the slideshow , or PDF of the slideshow, from your computer to the online website for slideshare.

Task 1 - An Overview of Slideshows

a. Check three of our favorite online slide shows, Big Huge Labs, Animoto and Slideshare

  • As you already know, Big Huge Labs is automatically connected to your FlickR account which makes using all your photos so easy. You can use the URL for the slideshow as a link from  your page to your slideshow. You can even make buttons to go right to your slideshow.

  • Animoto is a great place to make a slideshow of your photos with great music. The benefits of music during your slideshow is a memory maker.

  • Slideshare is a presentation platform type of slideshow. It may look more familiar. You have an option to show the slideshow in full screen. You will find code where you can embed the slideshow right into your webpage, this is a great feature if you want to use this slideshow as an integral part of your website, or for using your website during a presentation.

Task 2 - Examples of Online Slideshows

a. Check some of our examples of slideshows using our favorite tools:

  • We like BigHugeLabs because it automatically links right to your FlickR photo sets! Here is an example of my springtime shots.

You can include your own notes on the sidebar of the slideshow, the show will play continuously if you select that as an option. It is fast and easy!

Plus you can create links or buttons to put on your webpages.  View slideshow

  • Oh, but using Animoto is just like being a video producer. We love how photos take on a whole new dimension; because when you are finished adding your photos you can then add some music, highlight a specific photo, and by changing the music choice, the whole slideshow changes and the effects change. Save your slideshow in a variety of ways, with a variety of music and  you can choose the best when you are done.

Here is an Animoto that we used for our teaser for the K12onlineconference08. You will see what we mean about the music.

  • Finally, here is the slideshare example. You can see how different it is, and it requires you to create each page in a word document, or create your own Powerpoint, keynote, or opensource document, or a PDF. Then you upload your choice and voilĂ , a showslide. Here is a very plain example:

Task 3 - Creating Your Online Slideshows

a. Now you get a chance to create your 3 slideshows.

  • Big Huge Labs - Make sure you have a photoset already created in Flickr. Use the URL for the photoset and make your own slideshow using photos at Big Huge Labs.

  • Animoto - Make sure you have about 10-20 photos ready to upload in a slideshow format. Choose a song to go with your slideshow and at the end push the create button. This is a great option when you want to showcase a series of images or photos about your students. The great thing about Animoto is that in order to share this you can email the finished slideshow , you can post to YouTube, you can download it for your iPod and last but not least you can embed it online in a blog or wiki.

  • Slideshare - This one requires more work on the front end of the work. Create a slideshow telling the benefits of using images and slideshows in your classroom. Once it is created then upload the show to slideshare. Because this is a Web 2.0 tool there are many options for sharing the slideshow. You can share easily through Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Xanga, Blogger, try out this feature as well.

Task 4 - Sharing your Slideshows

a. Access our slideshows group in Ning.  Share your slideshows examples and the reasons for your slideshows topics.

Great job for the week!
